Rare and Early Anatolian Marble Idol
Rare and Early Anatolian Marble Idol
Item Details
Description
Asia Minor, modern day Turkey, Anatolian, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A carved marble idol representing a kneeling figure with a round head presenting an abstract visage with concave eyes and a projecting aquiline nose between, soft shoulders, schematic arms and/or breasts, and kneeling legs beneath. The meaning and function of such idols remains an enigma without any written records from this era. Archaeologists have theorized that since fertility was prized by these peoples, Anatolian idols took their inspiration, albeit in an abstract manner, from the female anatomy. Size: 3.125" W x 6.25" H (7.9 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
