Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, present-day Turkey, Anatolia, ca. 2800 to 2200 BCE. A lovely Kilia head made from a milky yellow-white marble with a stocky neck base and a triangular head devoid of any discernible facial features. Kilia are highly stylized female figures made throughout the Mediterranean during the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age. They are characterized by bulbous heads, long necks, and flat bodies with wide, flipper-like arms. When first made, the faces would have had painted details like eyes. Archaeologists have interpreted these figures as female and call them "stargazers" because their heads are tilted upwards. Size: 1.2" W x 1.5" H (3 cm x 3.8 cm); 2.8" H (7.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
