First novel by the English writer Henry Cockton (1807-1853). With 60 full-page steel engraving illustrations (caricatures) by Thomas Onwhyn (1814-1886). This humorous work on the whimsical jokes of a ventriloquist was highly praised by English literarati, which predicted a great career for Cockton. Cockton followed his initial success with "Sylvester Sound the Somnambulist", the experiences of a sleepwalker. This second novel established his stature. 60 illustrations by Onwhyn.Approx.8.5x6 inches, i-xx, 620 pp. 1/2 calf & gilt. Endpapers and all edges uniformly marbled. Light foxing throughout. Square, sharp, clean, and tight. Leather boards supple. An excellent copy.
