Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, Gaius (Caligula), ca. 37 to 41 CE. AE Sestertius, Struck ca. 40 to 41 CE. Obverse: CCAESARDIVIAVGPRONAVGPM-TRPIIIIPP. Laureate head to left/No legend. Reverse: SPQR/PP/OBCIVES/SERVATOS within wreath. RIC I 53, C26. Size: 1.45" W (3.7 cm); 17 grams

Caligula is famous for his abuse of power and general depravity, with ancient historians writing breathlessly horrified accounts of his behavior that have colored modern opinion of the man - but it seems clear that he combined a skill for theatrics and public speaking with a desire to be obeyed without question into a shockingly cruel reign.

Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection; ex-CNG sale 45 of March 18, 1998, Lot 1882
