Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Native American, Union County, Illinois, Paleo Period, ca. 2000 BP (0 BCE). An impressive stone axe knapped from a golden-colored chert with grey and red highlights. Knapped chert tools are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get them the correct shape requires training and skill. The edge of this axe is not sharp and there is no sign of reworking, suggesting that it was simply meant to be a ceremonial weapon or funerary adornment. Deep corner notches low on the body allow for hafting. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.7" W x 5.25" H (9.4 cm x 13.3 cm); height on stand: 7.1" (10.85 cm)
Provenance: private Vaught Collection, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
