LEE, Mary Custis (1808-1873) was a third cousin and the wife of Robert E. Lee, the prominent career military officer who subsequently commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War.[1] They married at her parents' home, Arlington House, in Virginia in 1831, and had seven children together; she survived him by three years.Autograph Letter Signed “Mary Custis Lee,” 2pp., Lexington, Sept 4, 1873, 2pp., tape repairs at folds, minor paper loss at edges. In part, “I suppose you have seen in the papers the account of the sinking of the canal boat in which my pictures were placed from Lynchburg. They arrived this morning in a worse condition... I am much troubled about them but hope in the hands of a good restorer they may yet be the same ... the pictures of Daniel Custis & of Col. Parke with the 4 large new gilt frames were scarcely injured ....” There is a second unsigned letter, 2pp., April 4, 1869 which does not seem to relate.
