Large Chinese Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze Buddha figure of Wutaishan Manjushri riding a lion as depicted in the Manjushri Lhakang in Sakya, Tibet, are intended as meditational deities; - intended as meditational forms. Beautiful, youthful and calm of expression, he has one face and two hands. The hair is piled on the crown of the head. The right hand is performing the Dharma Teaching mudra (gesture) at the heart; delicately held between the fingers of the left hand, a lotus stem rises above the left shoulder supporting a blossom. A jewel crown, hair ribbons, floral earrings, a choker, short and long necklaces, bracelets and anklets beautifully adorn the body. Draped across the upper arms and lower torso is a silk garment with an inner liner. The lower body is covered with a short skirt. The legs are folded in royal ease posture upon a crounching lion; above a moon disc and flower blossom seat rising from lotus pond. Extensive trace of gilt and blue-black pigment on the hair and red pigment on the lion mane. The underside with incised quatrefoil flori-form petal visvavajra mark surrounding the centralized DaiJi.
