Item Details
Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 19th century CE. A club made from palm wood, rounded at one end and shaped like an arrow at the other. Incised patterns on the rounded end are in the form of nested triangles that point towards each other; on the arrow there is a stippled pattern. Items like this one are cut from a single piece of heavy, tough palm wood that is adzed from the trunk of a standing tree and then further adzed into its current form. This item is made for fighting, often supplemented by more paddle-like "sword clubs", which were designed to deliver blows at close quarters. Clubs like this one fascinated the Europeans when they first encountered the local people of Papua New Guinea. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.2" W x 35" H (8.1 cm x 88.9 cm); height on stand; 38.25" (97.2 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection acquired in Bangkok, Thailand
