Description
Wonderful piece of history with a letter of provenance from the owner. This derby was worn by President Taft during his visit to El Paso, Texas on October 16, 1909. Taft was meeting the President of Mexico Porfirio Diaz. Known as the"Most Eventful Diplomatic Event in the History of Two Nations", this was the first in history between a president of the United States and a president of Mexico. This derby was either blown off or knocked off Taft's head and fell into thecrowd where it was recovered, and due to the president's security, it could not be returned. The leather interior band has the initials "WHT", and was made for Frankenberger and Co., Charleston, W. Va, which supplied this derby tothe president. Also included it a medal (1-1/2" x 3-1/2") depicting the reason of Taft's visit.
