Description
LEVI WELLS PRENTICE (AMERICAN, 1851-1935) LANDSCAPE PAINTING, oil on academy board, a finely executed example, diminutive in scale, featuring trees bearing early autumnal foliage along a rocky shoreline bordering a tranquil body of water, mountains in the distance, possibly an Adirondack Mountains scene, signed "L.W.P." lower right (partially obscured by frame). Housed in an old gilt frame. Circa 1875. 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" sight, 9 1/4" x 8 1/4" OA.
Painting in excellent visual condition with very minor areas of discoloration. Frame with very minor wear.
Provenance: From the private collection of Luke and Ann Woods, Cincinnati, OH and Spruce Pine, NC.
Catalogue Note: Born and raised on a farm in Lewis County, New York, Levi Wells Prentice (1851-1935) is listed as a landscape painter living in Syracuse by 1872 and is known to have remained in upstate New York until 1884, when he moved to Brooklyn and began to focus more on still-life compositions. Recognized for his unique style which incorporates dexterous precision and elements of naiveté (it is not known if the artist ever received formal training), Prentice was relatively prolific, and must have achieved some degree of success in his day. The present work, probably executed early in his career and likely a scene from his native Adirondack region, clearly demonstrates Prentice's innate abilities as an artist.
