AMERICAN OR EUROPEAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A MAN, oil on canvas, striking depiction of a seated figure, probably a builder/architect wearing brown coat, patterned vest, and green cravat, compass and square lying on table next to him, column in background with landscape revealed at left edge, signed indistinctly and dated "1843" at left edge. Together with another example, possibly later, depicting a seated young woman in black dress with white lace collar. Each housed in matching modern frames. 1843-1860. Each 15 1/4" x 12 1/4" sight, 21 1/2" x 18 1/2" OA.
Very good visual condition. Each cleaned and revarnished with possible minor inpainting.
