This striking sculpture was created by a Swiss Art Nouveau sculptor named Alfred Jean Foretay (1861-1944). Velleda was a priestess and a prophet of a Germanic tribe named the Bructeri, who were prominent during the Batavian rebellion of A.D. 69-70 because of her correct prediction of the rebels success against enemy Roman legions.
