Description

Well-used Initiation Mask; Ibibio people, Nigeria. 9.5 inches tall. Hand rubbed, natural patina with painted lips and interior showing adze marks as well as evidence of prolonged and repeated use in performance. Some loss to edges (visible from behind) but otherwise in good condition and very stable. Ex New York City collection formed during the 1960's and 70's; acquired before 1972. Provided with a custom mount.
