Mayan Peten Polychrome Cylinder, Dignitary & Chief
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Peten, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A polychrome cylinder that retains a painted scene replete with dramatic iconography which ignites the viewer's imagination. Featured in the center is a highly decorated standing lord or chief donning an elaborate headdress and beaded pectoral whose elite status is emphasized by his large scale (note that his head assumes the level of the upper glyph band, making him higher than all the other figures in the scene). To his left is a kneeling dignitary wearing a grand feathered headdress with arms folded who looks downward in a submissive fashion. An attendant stands behind him, and another attendant (with arms folded over his large stomach) stands behind the chief. A marvelous piece presenting a visual narrative that may be explained in the vertical glyph column between the chiefs and the upper rim glyph band. Size: 4.375" W x 6.5" H (11.1 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired at Arte Primitivo (May 14, 2014, lot 164); ex-private New Jersey collection; ex-Harmer Rooke Galleries, New York City, 1972; ex-William and Catherine Sherrill collection
