18th/19th century Cuzco school painting, Maria with sheep, 30" x 38".An outstanding museum quality painting from the famous Cuzco school and period of painting in 18th/19th century Peru.The iconography of the Virgin Mary as a shepardess is a familiar one in the Church, with the lambs representing rebirth.There is a wonderful depiction of a demonic boar in the upper right hand corner, with an archangel throwing a lighting bolt.Relined canvas.Newly added photo shows the old and new canvases from the side view.Blacklight reveals very minor inpainting in the border areas,near the outer edges of the painting, less than 10% of the overall.
Condition
This painting was relined approximately 20 years ago, from the appearance of the new canvas on the back, that is supporting the older 18th/19th century canvas on top.See the photos.Scattered retouching over 10% to 15% of the surface, areas along the edge show abrasion, some scratches but generally good condition and intact for it's size.
