Description
Ink on Montval Paper
Size: 10 x 13
Year: 1949
From November 1948 to 1949 Pablo Picasso created a series of original engravings as part of a limited edition portfolio featuring Prosper Mèrimèe's timeless story Carmen. The limited edition consisted of only 289 copies for the regular edition, an edition of 20 copies reserved for collaborators (Hors de Commerce) and a deluxe edition of 11 containing four aquatints. The engravings offered by the seller are from the collaborator's edition of 20. They were marked A to T
Have watermarks within the paper.
The Carmen suite was published by La Bibliotheque Française: (Paris) 1949, printed on Montval wove paper with deckle edge, Printed May 14, 1949, by Atelier Roger Lacourière, Paris.
Provenance: Both engravings are from a complete edition of the Carmen suite, from the collaborator's edition of 20, hand signed in pencil by Pablo Picasso. The suite was acquired from a major auction house and prior to that from a private estate. Additionally, I am in possession of all invoices and receipts documenting my acquisition of the artwork.
Condition: Created approximately 68 years ago and have been stored unbound within the original portfolio. The paper is bright, no fading, no discoloration, no foxing, some of the images may have an occasional soft handling imperfections, also some of the paper may contain occasional darker flecks due to what appears to be tiny wood fibers within the paper. There is also some slight cockling* to the right and lower edge of the paper on some of the engravings.** The paper used for the Carmen Suite is Montval and is likely handmade paper rather than mass produced machined made paper. some of the paper is slightly uneven and the pages may not appear as perfect rectangles.

Condition
Very good, small imperfection on the deckle edge. It appears as a small notch and the paper is a bit uneven. This is more than likely due to the process of creating handmade paper.
