Description
Mexico, 1909 CE. One of the finest retablos we have seen, this is a bright and well-painted piece of devotional folk art. It shows two people praying before an altar to the Virgin Mary; bright colors mark out the room, with its green drapes, peach walls, yellow cloth on the altar, and most of all the bright blue reserved for the Virgin's robe. Size: 13.85" W x 10" H (35.2 cm x 25.4 cm)
Porvenir estado Coahuila."
A very short paraphrase of that is: "In April, 1909, Senora Manuela Viramontes de Rodriguez became ill. Doctors felt that it was hopeless and that she would die. She, along with her husband Jesus M. Rodriguez, prayed to the Virgin Mary and God and was healed; this retablo commemorates this, and comes from the state of Coahuila.
