Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A black-on-red negative resist painted human effigy pottery jar, its ovoid body decorated with vertical registers of striations alternating with spiral motifs and horizontal striations around the shoulder, the vessel's neck representing a head with a long applied nose and pursed lips with perforation as well as interlaced-coil ear ornaments with coffee-bean eyes to one side, suggesting flanking pairs at one time. Size: 7" L x 9.25" W x 13.5" H (17.8 cm x 23.5 cm x 34.3 cm)
The complexion of the visage is further adorned with negative resist spirals as well as wavy and straight striations. A marvelous and very large example from the ancients of the Colombia/Ecuador border that was most likely used as a burial offering accompanied by other ornaments of semi-precious stone, shell, metal, and more perishable materials such as textiles and feather work.

Condition
Repaired in the vicinity of ear ornament/handles. Ear ornaments reattached. Expected surface wear with minor scratching and pigment losses as shown. Lower end in particular shows abraded surface. Nice manganese deposits and burnishing marks.
