Description

Chine[China] Photographs by Helene Hoppenot - 1st Ed. Paris: Albert Skira, 1946. First edition. Softcover, approx. 10.5x14 inches. Original printed dust-jacket over stiff cardboard. This book represents Hélène Hoppenot's impressions of a trip she made to China where she photographed everyday life and culture of Chinese people in the country and in the city. Her striking photographs are accompanied with text from Paul Claudel who was deeply interested in Chinese culture and traveled to China as well. The photograph chosen as frontispiece is pretty disturbing, and seems to have little to do with China. Indeed, it represents a man about to fall from the Empire State building. The caption reads: 85 floors up on New York's Empire State building, a suicide slowly lets go the edge of the parapet. Original glassine wrapper is present in poor condition. Stiff covers in good shape. Damp staining present as the photos show, but still very nice. Text in French.
