The text is in German, the inscriptions under the pictures are in English, German, Italian, Spanish and French.
Hard boards, original cloth, gold lettering on front board and spine [spine and board edges fading: see photos]; large format: 9.1/2" x 12.1/4"; XVII + 304 pages with sepia photographs on each page, very good condition.
"The pictures show places that hadn't changed since the early 1800's. Many of these places -- in Dresden, Danzig -- we lost owing to neglect by the East; others -- Mannheim, Dusseldorf -- were destroyed during WWII. But many places photographed -- Heidelberg, Muenster, for instance -- either were untouched during the war or were lovingly and faithfully restored by the people of Germany. A fascinating glimpse at a long-lost past, and in some cases, a past that startlingly remains with us today." [a private review]
