Description
After Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669), "Head of a Rat Catcher", signed within matrix at left of cap with date. Scarce small figural etching after the Dutch master depicting a bearded male rat catcher in profile with tall hat or cap with rat on shoulder. This work is related to the artist's etching of the same title (also known as "The Rat Poison Peddler") depicting a full length rat catcher at the door of a cottage among other figures from 1632. Framed approximately 22" x 17.3". Sheet size approximately 1.9" x 1.7". Reference: Bartsch 121 copy 10; Arthur Mayger Hind 1923, 97 copy; Christopher White and Karel G. Boon 1969, 121 copy 10; Ludwig Münz 1952, 255 copy. Provenance: Property from the Estate of a Gentleman in Macon, Georgia. Note: This etching is also in the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford.
