Description
W.R. Burnett Inscribed 1st edition -Bitter Ground-. 1958, inscribed 1st edition. A simple Western storyline ...a notorious figure, Doc Sprigge, shaped after the real life Doc Holiday character. Doc Sprigge comes to the town of San Ygnacio, one of the last real Western towns of the era, to stake a claim. He knows that this sleepy little town will soon explode as the railroad is set to come through. Ben Gann is the old, wizened town Marshall that has been everywhere and seen everything. With the railway imminent, Gann knows that the likes of a Doc Sprigge will soon follow and he wants nothing to do with them. So, Marshall Gann takes a hard line against all "Outsiders" to the town. Push eventually comes to shove and Doc Sprigge and the Marshall come to loggerheads. The one thing that Doc does not count on however is the tall, lanky livery hand that everybody calls "Staff". Doc swears that he's seen this man before, but he just can't place him.... With references to Western Legends such as Billy the Kid and famous Western towns such as Tombstone, this novel is very enjoyable. It is fast paced and... [once begun, hard to put down]. [j. nelson]Tape ghosts to the boards, spine slant. Good condition. A very uncommon inscribed book. Looks great in the classic 50's dust jacket.
