Ancient Syro-Hittite Bronze Chimera Votive
Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 12th to 8th century BCE. A fascinating chimera votive, made using the lost wax bronze casting technique. The figure has an ungulate's body, standing on petite hooves, with a pointed tail that suggests a goat or a deer. The head of the figure is anthropomorphic, with a squat, round face. The face wears a nose ring and has many earrings on each ear. A round spout with a flared rim emerges from the top of the head, which is turned sideways on the body to face the viewer. The Syro-Hittite people seemed fascinated by chimera figures, often creating artwork where a human head was part of an animal's body. The small spout may have been for placing offerings or pouring sacred oil. Size: 1.4" W x 1.9" H (3.6 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
