Item Details
Description
Ancient South Arabia, Yemen, ca. early first millennium BCE. A cast bronze ceremonial ladle with a flat handle incised with the ancient Yemeni alphabet (also known as Old South Arabian), probably in the language of the Kingdom of Qataban. The bowl of the ladle is deep, with a slightly flared, flat rim. Where it meets the handle is a rectangular plate in the form of two snakes rearing their heads with their backs to each other. Ladles had multiple purposes in antiquity: for serving, for measuring, and for use in religious/funerary ceremonies. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.5" L x 2.75" W x 8.95" H (6.4 cm x 7 cm x 22.7 cm); height on stand: 9.2" (23.4 cm)
