Greek Hellenistic Terracotta Standing Goddess - Hecate
Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd centuries BCE. A hollow, mold-made votive figure of a standing goddess with gorgeously-depicted, flowing clothing and a star-shaped crown. This is probably a representation of Hecate, who was often associated with crossroads, sorcery, knowledge of poisonous plants, and necromancy. One of her hands is depicted raised; the other is lost but may have held a torch or a key, which are her common implements. Votive figures like this one were sold as offerings at temples or made to be kept in home altars. Size: 2.5" L x 3.35" W x 9.75" H (6.4 cm x 8.5 cm x 24.8 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired over twenty years ago
