Description
Lot of Steichen Murals. Rolled murals and lumberjack artist’s proof – Chicago World’s Fair 1933. On back of the lumber jack artist’s proof, it is handwritten: “John, this is to be enlarged to 10 ½ ft. high making the strips 5 ¼ ft.” Another file note for this item indicates that the photo is by Kaufmann & Fabry, a firm that did all the photography for Chicago World’s Fair, including Steichen’s photomurals. Included is a photo of how the rolled images, when installed together as intended, would have appeared in the World’s Fair installation. L to R: bridge, water scene, and public building. There is a picture of a photograph of how the rolled images, when installed together as intended, would have appeared in the World’s Fair installation. L to R: bridge, water scene, and public building (See image 2). The image indicates that each panel was 8 2/3 x 3 2/5 feet. Overall dimensions of the assembled mural were 17.3 x 57.8 feet.
The Steichen photomurals for the Chicago World’s Fair 1933 were installed in the Hall of States, New York State Exhibition. According to the official guidebook, this fair had no separate state buildings as previous world’s fairs did. Instead, there was “one great building” to “house the official state exhibits in accordance with a plan that has met with approval of the participating states.”
Included in this lot are rolled segments of photomurals, 30 total, each 40” x 7’ or 8’
