Irving Resnikoff, (Russian 1897-1988), studied art at St. Petersburg Imperial Art Academy. After the revolution came to New York in 1923, to pursue a portraitist career. In 1978 court proceedings found that New York art dealer Leo Fox from early 1950s hired Resnikoff to paint under alias Charles J. Fox, a number of portraits of US prominent figures. Resnikoff created portraits of President Kennedy ($13,750 at 2012 Sotheby’s), J. E. Hoover, Senator Thurmond, Treasury Secretary H. Fowler, Chief Justice H. F. Stone, Chairmen C. Cannon, George H. Mahon of the House Appropriations Committee, J.G. Stewart, Architect of the Capitol, and three Army Secretaries. The C.J. Fox signature appears on the portraits of business leaders: the Coca-Cola J. P. Austin, H.S. Geneen of ITT, A. P. Giannini of the Bank of America, V.J. Skutt of Omaha Mutual. Although Leo Fox's scheme exposed, Resnikoff-Fox portraits are still in many government agencies, business HQs and institutions.
