Arthur Bevan Collier (1832-1908) Small Oil on Canvas, Widemouth Bay, North Cornwall. Signed and dated 1901 en verso. Measures 8"x6"x.75". Weight 6 oz. PROVENANCE: The Estate of a Charleston, South Carolina Art Dealer / Gallery Owner. Arthur Bevan Collier was born in Plymouth, the son of the MP for Plymouth. He was a landscape painter, primarily in oils and specialised in scenes of Wales, Scotland, Devon and Cornwall. He was a Justice of the Peace and a Major and Hon. Lieut. Col. of the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry. He lived at Carmartha, Callington, Cornwall. Both is his daughters, Amy and Lilian were listed artists. He died in 1908 and is buried in the churchyard at Lezant. He exhibited between 1855 and 1899 at the Royal Academy (20), the British Institution (7) and Suffolk Street (53). According to Graves Dictionary he exhibited a total of 92 paintings at London Exhibitions up to 1893. He also exhibited in Liverpool at the Walker, in Birmingham and Manchester, and one of his paintings entitled 'Trebarwith, Nr. Tintagel' is in the Birmingham City Art Gallery.
