Description
Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd centuries CE. A rectangular lead panel with cast relief decoration featuring a register of playful, perhaps dancing, winged Eros figures in various positions framed by a twisted, rope-pattern border above and below. To the Romans, Eros was depicted as a childlike cherub figure; whereas to the earlier Greeks, he was a muscular youth. Here the Eros figures seem to retain their mischievous air, ready to help couples fall in love through not-entirely-innocent interventions. Lead applique panels like this were used to decorate furniture as well as sarcophagi. Custom stand. Size: 10.875" W x 3.125" H (27.6 cm x 7.9 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on stand
