Item Details

Description

James Griffiths is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists and besides being an accomplished painter, he is a bit of a historian. Griffiths (American, 1947 - ) has given us a detailed view of the harbor in Shanghai in which are berthed several English tea clippers. Entitled “Anchored in the Woosung The British Tea Clipper ships Cutty Sark and Serica at Shanghai, 1870” was painted in 1991 and several tea clippers are visible in the background. A sheet affixed to the back of the painting gives a detailed history of the tea trade and the famous, fleet transports pictured. Signed and dated in the lower right hand corner. Sight size is 15 1/4 by 23 3/4 inches. Total size with frame and classic French mat is 26 1/8 by 34 inches. Excellent condition.
