Item Details
Description
Rare Spanish water jug produced in 1883 and decorated with a lobster on one side and a very early depiction of the Rookwood RP logo, most likely created by Alfred Brennan who painted a number of RP trademarks on the exterior of vases in this year (see Peck, The Second Book of Rookwood Pottery on page 21). There are also multiple bands of impressed designs, one band highlighted in gold, one done in platinum. Impressed on the bottom ROOKWOOD, 1883, shape 108, Y for Yellow clay and the kiln mark. A drawing of this piece is shown at the bottom of the 1942 B. Altman Rookwood sale advertisement, a rendering of which can be found on page 30 of Peck listed above. This means the vase was held back by Rookwood and not sold until 1942. There is fine overall crazing. Height is 9 5/8 inches.
