Karel Appel, Dutch, 1921-2006, Biomorphic figures, watercolor and graphite. c.1971. PROVENANCE: painted for and personally given to the superintendent of Appel's apartment building at 333 East 69th St. in Manhattan in the early 1970's, thence to the daughter, the current consignor. Appel rented this apartment in New York at the recommendation of his friend and fellow artist Richard Lindner who also lived there. The Appel Foundation has confirmed that Appel lived on 69th Street during this period. In addition, the New York Public Library's Art Research department has located a listing for Karel Appel in the 1973 edition of Who's Who in American Art, which gives a mailing address of 333 W 69th St, NY NY 10021 as well as confirming Lindner's residence there.
