Description

Pair porcelain pillow vases each hand painted with the portraitures of two popular American poets. First, world famous author, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the obverse having a paragraph taken from his The Psalm of Life poem that reads: Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Second vase reveals the romantic poet, William Cullen Bryant with a verse from his poem The Battle-Field on the back reading: Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again The eternal years of God are hers; But Error, wounded, writhes in pain, And dies among his worshippers. Both vases bear the underglaze marks C.T. & S plus two artists monograms for the portraits and finishing work. Minor gold wear. Excellent condition.
