Description

Details: 4Pcs This lot consists of antique military kepis, a military pillbox cap and a short shako or stiffened forage cap with large insignia. These caps are from circa late 19th to early-mid 20th century. This lot is from the estate of a well-known and well-respected lifetime Civil War collector in Upstate New York. Worth Auctions will feature scores of antique weapons, paintings, and unusual items.

The two kepis are of dark blue or black fabric with small gold buttons on either side of the visor showing the Federal Eagle facing its right with arrows in the right talon. One has a golden color knotted hat cord between the buttons. The interior of that cap has a shiny, topless black lining and very fine brown leather sweatband. Makers mark reads "J.Y. DAVIS' SONS WASHINGTON HATTERS & FURRIERS. The other has a bullion insignia with Officers wreath and abbreviation "C.I.D.". Interior has black lining and makers mark which reads "RIDABOCK & CO. FORMERLY BAKER & MCKENNEY MILITARY GOODS 141 GRAND ST. NEW YORK. These caps measure approximately 6" W x 8.5" L. The "C.I.D." cap is shorter at 3.25" with a 1.4" front rise while the corded cap is 3.5" with a 1.75" front rise. Lacquered visors are 1.25". Buttons have a diameter of 14mm. Measurements are approximate.

The shako is of navy blue with hard black top disc and black leather trim accented with gold bullion braid. A small gold color metal accent surrounds a small vent in the back of the hat near the crown. The visor is rounded and slopes downwards, and a small sticker on the back of it reads "7 3/8". A black strap with buckle runs along the top of the visor between the buttons, one of which remains. The button is large, golden colored, and shows an Infantry or hunting horn. The gold color metal insignia on the front shows a variety of instruments, five-point stars and the letters "OLCB" in grey metal. Writing on the pressed fiber interior of the hat reads "Old Lhyme" and the makers mark reads "JACOB REED'S SONS MILITARY CLOTHIERS 920 & 922 CHESTNUT ST. Philadelphia." This hat measures approximately 6" W x 8.5" L x 6" H. The button has 1" diameter.

The brimless cap is of navy blue material with white trim around the base and crown and in in quatrefoil on the top. There is also a twisted and knotted bullion cord running around the front of the cap between two small gold color US Army buttons which show the Federal eagle facing its right with arrows in right talon and 13 five-point stars. The interior has a fine leather sweatband with a small "7" sticker. Brown quilted lining bears a silver makers mark which reads "HENRY V. ALLIEN & CO. MILITARY GOODS BOND ST N.Y." This cap measures approximately 6" W x 7" L x 2.5" H. The buttons have a 14mm diameter.
Condition / Notes: These items show a typical range of period wear, age and handling which may include patina, abrasions, rust, loose stitches, flakes or cracks to leather and soiling. The corded kepi has some nips to the fabric on the body of the cap and the "C.I.D." kepi has abrasion on the brim. Please see photos.
