Description
South America, Peru, ca. late 17th century CE. A stunning cedar wood trunk covered in polychromed leather that has been hand tooled with extensive decorative and iconographic motifs, all embellished with rich red, russet brown, black, and white hues. The lid features a central rectangular panel adorned with a llama in composite profile flanked by a pair of stylized flowers with foliated tendrils meandering throughout. This panel is in turn surrounded by an elaborate border embellished with flowers, leafy vines, and two beautiful peacocks or hummingbirds arranged as mirror images of one another at the lower end. The rim of the lid is also decorated with birds, flowers, and foliage, adding to the flora and fauna narrative, as well as a scalloped edge embellished with a stylized shell motif. The walls of the trunk continue this lavish tribute to the natural world with more blossoms, verdant trailing vines, sweet birds, as well as a pair of lively four-legged animals in composite profile. Adding to the aesthetics and history of this piece are the finely crafted iron hinges, flanges, and key hole surround. An exquisite example replete with impressive artistry, history, and tales of the Spanish Colonial past. Size: 23" L x 13.5" W x 9" H (58.4 cm x 34.3 cm x 22.9 cm)

Condition
Losses toward rear and underside. Not surprisingly, there is no key. Expected surface wear with some pigment losses, though imagery is still quite vivid. Metalwork shows expected oxidation making for a nice patina.
