Description
Roman, late Imperial period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A bronze pyxis, a rounded vessel originally made to have a fitted lid, in the form of a plump bird with a long neck, bulging eyes, spread wings, and a large tail. The wings are openwork, giving them a delicate, almost-butterfly-like appearance. A spout rises from the center of the bird's back and an additional small opening is behind it, above the tail. The entire vessel stands on a small, round foot. This was probably used for holding oils or perfumes. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.3" L x 2.7" W x 2.2" H (8.4 cm x 6.9 cm x 5.6 cm); height on stand: 2.55" (6.5 cm)
