(GUSTAV MAHLER) ALMA MAHLER
(1879-1964) Viennese socialite and composer, wife of composer Gustav Mahler, then architect Walter Gropius, and then novelist Franz Werfel. Excellent group of two documents, both concerning recording and property rights to Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7, includes: printed D.S. "Alma Maria Mahler", 1p. 4to., [n.p.], March 1, 1931, a "Vollmachtserklarung" (power of attorney), granting the holder the rights to use Mahler's music in talking films, and delineating the royalties that Alma is entitled to. Signed very boldly at the conclusion in purple ink. Paper clip mark at the top left corner, else very good. WITH: typed D.S. "Alma Maria Mahler", 1p. 4to., Vienna, April 24, 1937, an "Erklarung", or legal statement, confirming that the copyright granted to the Ed. Bote & G. Bock company of Berlin for Mahler's Symphony No. 7 has expired and needs to be renewed. Folds, paper clip mark in the upper left corner, else very good. Also present is an unsigned typed note, 2pp. long 12mo., [n.p.], Sep. 14, 1931, to Dr. Bock of the aforementioned company, asking whether the original copyright has precedence over the Power of Attorney document listed above. In his reply typed below the original message, Dr. Bock states that the Power of Attorney document signed by Mahler granting her 50% of royalties should take precedence. Very good. Three pieces.
