Good group of one note and eight signatures, all executed by Western diplomats or military figures in China, Includes: HENRY CHADS (1819-1906), vice-admiral of the Royal Navy who fought pirates in the Strait of Malacca, an important sea route between China and India; HARRY T. BROOKING (1864-1944), officer in the Indian Army, participated in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion and the Siege of Peking; HUGH FRASER (1837-1894) Secretary of the British Legation and later envoy to China; ALFRED HIPPISLEY (1848-1939), British Chinese Secretary, instrumental in developing America's "Open Door" trade policy with China; EUGENE DE BUTZOW (1837-1904), Russian minister to China; FREDERICK S.A. BOURNE (1854-1940), judge of the British Supreme Court for China and Japan; JOSE DE AGUILAR, Spanish general consul to China, fragment of a letter with signature; HARRIET HART, wife of ROBERT HART, Inspector-General of the Imperial Maritime Custom Service, A.N.S, 1p. 12mo., Feb. 16 [n.y.], accepting an invitation to dinner; and a fragment of a letter from a Belgian envoy to China, on Belgian Legation letterhead. Some signatures bear mounting remnants on the verso, else very good.
