Description
VINDICTIVE AMERICAN AMBULANCE DRIVER'S LETTER
American soldier's letter to his brother 6pp. 8vo. (incomplete) on YMCA letterhead, "2nd Division Hospital Dagupan, Luzon", Jan. 29, 189[9] . The soldier, no doubt serving under General Arthur MacArthur in his attempt to capture the town of Caloocan and secure the Manila to Dagupan railway, writes in part: "...only three men on a ambulance and sometimes a load of wounded and killed...always on the lookout for fear of running into a trap...the niggers [Filipinos] knew their business they could have killed us more than once...surrounded by a savage race of people...before long I think they will have these people civilized...kill everyone that is able to handle a gun...the hardest race of people to kill...it take a krag bullet clean through the heart to kill them...the bullets can't even catch them...they have found men with their throats cut and tongues cut out and...balls [partially erased] cut out...the only good niggers are dead ones...Gen. [J. Franklin] Bell is there...he certainly makes them niggers fight for their lives...". Some soiling, else very good.
