Description
WORLD WAR I NURSE'S PHOTO ALBUM
An intriguing photo album, 7" x 4 1/2", belonging to Mary Luisa Penberthy, and English nurse stationed at several military hospitals during World War I. The album contains 82 b/w images, taken at the 1st Sectional Hospital at Devonport, the Victoria Red Cross Hospital at Manchester, the Yorkshire Military Hospital, the King Edward VI School at Stratford-upon-Avon, the New College at Harrogate, and the Military Hospital at Bollington. The photos depict many of the doctors, nurses, and patients of these hospitals, many of whom are identified by hand-written captions. Some images display the wounds suffered by these soldiers, including missing legs and bandaged limbs. The photos also depict the interior of the hospital wards, the facades of the buildings, and the grounds, offering a thorough view of this homefront setting made necessary by the horrors of the Continental war. Many images are somewhat faded and show toning commensurate with age, and the binding of the album is split and somewhat worn, else very good.
