Description
M1866 CHASSEPOT BAYONET
French sword bayonet, 22 1/2" blade, 27 1/2" overall, designed for use with the M1866 Chassepot bolt action rifle used most prominently during the Franco-Prussian War. The "yataghan"-style blade is oxidized throughout, and bears a faint inscription in cursive, identifying it as probably being manufactured at the Imperiale de St. Etienne arsenal in 1868. The iron handguard bears the serial number "G 56626", and the quillion bears three minute proof marks. The handle is of cast brass, and the retaining latch is intact and fully functional. The blade is housed in a steel scabbard, oxidized throughout with some rust, and marked with the non-matching serial number "R 97416". The scabbard also bears two or three minor dents, else very good.
