Description
LONDON-MADE PERCUSSION PISTOLS
Pair of similar but mismatched smoothbore percussion pistols, each with a 9" barrel, 14 1/2" overall. Both pistols feature brass barrels marled "London" at the top of the breech, with two proof marks depicting a crown over "P" and a crown over "V" on the left side. Both bear an escutcheon plate at the top of the writs, engraved with the initials "IP", and both butts are finished with a metal cap in the form of an open-mouthed gorgon. Both feature matching patterns of engraving on the cock, lock plate, and trigger guard. However, notable differences exist between the two weapons: one pistol is stocked with much darker wood, and that stock is inlaid with nickel silver wire in a floral pattern. The side plate is more elaborate, and the profile of the grip is more bulbous. The lock plate of the lighter-stocked pistol bears a faint, barely-distinguishable maker's name, ending in "...eyster". The forestock of this pistol is also longer by about 3/4". It is possible that one of these pistols was created at a slightly later date to replace the lost twin in a matched set. Both pistols are fitted with a dark horn ramrod, although the tip of that fitted to the lighter-stocked pistol has been broken off. Both pistols bear hairline cracks to the stock, with some loosening of the wire inlay, and the loss of a small piece of the sideplate of the darker-stocked pistol, else very good.
