Description
The bronze hilt of stylized Tatar form, with characteristic short quillons and canted pommel, decorated with complex baroque modeling involving shells and scrollwork, with remains of original gilding. The blade likewise a conflation of Tatar and Polish styles: the broad forte tapering to the cutting edge, the yelman or back edge expanding abruptly from the spine, the sharp tip suited to both cutting and thrusting. At the forte are etched the cross and orb (one of the symbols of the Polish kings) amongst vinework, together with a Tatar tamga or clan mark_x000D_
inlaid in silver, comprising an arrow-shaped device flanked by Xs. In its tooled leather-covered wooden scabbard with steel chape. Mid-18th century. Areas of minor rust and pitting to blade. Scabbard as found. Condition IV_x000D_
