Description
A stunning Egyptian serpentine cosmetic palette in the form of a fish, New Kingdom, c. 1570 - 1075 BC, both sides with incised detail, the usable side with recessed area for grinding cosmetic powders with detailed head and tail and the bottom with incised scales and naturalistic detail. A very nice example showing wear from use in antiquity and with museum inventory number in white paint on the edge. L: 4 4/5 in (12.3cm), W: 2 1/5 in (5.6cm). Cf. J. Vandier d'Abbadie, Catalogue des Objets de Toilette Egyptiens, (Paris, 1972)p. 35, no. 87 for a similar example; Ex estate of Seward Kennedy, New York. Mr. Kennedy worked for decades as a lawyer for the Mobil Corporation, and acquired his collection throughout decades of travel beginning in the 1950's.
