Description
Oil on canvas 70 x 105cm. (27 1/2 x 41 1/4in.) Provenance: Sale: Sotheby's, Shadwell Park, Thetford, Norfolk, 22nd October 1992, lot 274 The church San Geremia is located along the Grand Canal in Venice, and was first errected in the eleventh century. The current edifice designed by Carlo Corbellini and built in 1753, houses the relics of St. Lucy of Syracuse. The present facade dates from 1861. As well as being a destination for those making a pilgrimage to worship St. Lucy, San Geremia has long been a popular subject for artists visiting Venice including Francesco Guardi whos painted work of 1750 is almost identical in its composition to the lot offered here.
