Item Details
Description
Southern Song Dynasty, 1127-1279 AD. A conical ceramic bowl with basal ring, brown 'hare's fur' glaze. 187 grams, 12.5cm (5"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1990s. 'Hare's fur' glaze was developed in Fujian province, China where it is called Jian ware. The brown-black glaze of Jian ware was often marked with streaks or spots, called 'hare's fur', which are the crystalline markings of the iron oxide in the glaze precipitated during firing, where it collects into spots of pure metallic iron.
