Description
2nd century AD. A fragmentary marble bust depicting a draped female, probably the goddess Isis, braids of hair falling at the shoulders, drapery across the chest. Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate. 12cm (4 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; previously from a German collection formed in the early 1980s. In terms of iconography, this statue displays some similarities with the so-called 'Hope Isis' sold at Christies for $962500 in 2011. The similar twisted braids falling on the shoulders, and heavy diagonal drapery at the breast, rather than the more conventional 'Isis Knot', suggest that this piece may have been roughly contemporary with the 'Hope Isis' and was created with the well-known sculpture in mind.
