Description
1st-2nd century AD. A lead end-panel from a casket depicting a temple, with a central arched entrance flanked by two porticos; within the arch, a statue of a god, possibly Dis (Pluto); in the left-hand portico, a statue of a male holding a staff, possibly Charon, ferryman of the Underworld; in the right-hand portico, the statue of a dog, possibly intended to depict Cerberus; the pediment of the temple simply outlined, the borders with cast floral detailing. 6.7 kg, 38.5cm (15"). Property of an Essex gentleman; previously in a Hampshire collection; acquired on the UK art market before 2000.
