Description
1st-2nd century AD. A lead side-panel from a casket, depicting a pediment with ropework borders and vegetation supported by columns; in the arcades between the columns, a bird and draped standing figures including three examples of Dis (Pluto) in curled Phrygian cap holding an axe, a facing Mercury with caduceus in the left hand, a profile Victory with wings and billowing robe. 26.2 kg, 1.2m (4'"). Property of an Essex gentleman; previously in a Hampshire collection; acquired on the UK art market before 2000.
