French Henri II Style Carved Oak Armoire, 18th c., the ogee pierce carved dentillated crown over a frieze with a brass nailhead "1780" date, above triple panel doors, now glazed, with long incised brass escutcheons and long fiche hinges, flanked by lappet carved pilasters, over three carved panels and a serpentine skirt, with brass tack decoration overall, H.- 79 1/2 in., W.- 57 5/8 in., D.- 26 3/4 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. Approximate ¼ inch gaps between bottom boards. Key lacking. Rust on lock which is stuck open. Slight separations between upper corners of doors. Hairline horizontal cracks at tops of doors. Approximate 2 inch area of heavy wear around second numeral of date at top. Twelve ½ inch pieces of carving along lowest edge of crown lacking. Approximate 10 inch crack along left side. Apparent repair to 4 inch break on side of left foot. ¼ inch gap between skirt and left leg. Several knots with short cracks on right side. 1 inch circular crack around slightly indented knot on right side. An intriguing piece.
